Portraits of Nature Art Opening featuring artist Kristin Link

Join natural history artist Kristin Link for the opening of her exhibit at the Copper River Gallery in the Cordova Center. Learn more about her work at http://kristinillustration.com/

Artist's Statement

I am in love with studying the natural world around me, and from my place of solitude on the Nizina River, outside McCarthy, AK, I have plenty of opportunities to do so. When I make a painting or drawing I spend intense time observing my subjects and distilling their shapes and textures onto the page with pen, paint, and pencil. I use select detail, like a divot in a rock or the shape of a leaf, to create focus and move the eye across the page. I create intimate portraits of inanimate objects including bird nests, clumps of vegetation, and rocks to appreciate the beauty and the story of each thing. In some work, other papers including maps or ledger paper, are incorporated into my drawings. These help me to tell the story of how we try to understand and quantify the land around us. I use my training as a naturalist and science illustration to make observations about natural history, but I am also interested in the human connection, and how I project myself onto the world around me.

Rick Van de Poll Keynote: It's All Connected

IT'S ALL CONNECTED

Join mycologist and ecologist Dr. Rick Van de Poll for an entertaining and informative overview of the mushrooms of the Cordova area. This illustrated talk will highlight the essential connection between wildlife (especially salmon) and the surrounding ecosystem, all of which are dependent on the diversity and decomposing function of fungi. Various ecosystem types will be discussed along with their key mushroom associates as we explore the role these fungi play in regulating and recycling nutrients, maintaining forest health, stabilizing soil, and creating sensory markers for migrating salmon.

Field Sketching Workshop with Kristin Link

Spending time outside with your sketchbook is a unique way to interact with the landscape and to study nature. Field sketching is also a wonderful medium for sharpening observation skills and for building a visual vocabulary.

A typical workshop covers materials and techniques for working quickly in the field as well as exercises for drawing accurately from life. Students focus on the landscape up close and far away, explore how to tell stories, and keep a journal of informative observations. There is no experience necessary to participate in a field sketching workshop and all levels are welcome.

This workshop has an additional cost to cover materials and instruction. Must be registered for full festival first, in order to sign up for this Workshop.
